GCE L2 Unit 5 Reflection

Honestly when reading unit 5, my head was spinning. There was more information than I could visualize. I watched the video that was attached and it helped a little, but I am one who learns by doing. I read the whole unit 5 while thinking about the data I could use this for. All the possibilities swimming in my head didn't help my comprehension of the article I was reading. I greatly appreciated the opportunity to practice what I was learning with the challenge.

In the classroom, I see me using this daily. We are a data driven school and knowing the students data off the top of my head has been something I have been able to guess but without definite proof. I would look at all the data, put the major data points into a Google Sheet, and then not look at it until I needed to add the next data point. For me, the reason that I would create it and leave it, is because I would have lots of data points on paper or in notebooks that would get easily misplaced or lost. This was helpful in the moment as I needed to look quickly at the data and make a plan to help them improve and then move on. With a pivot table, I can see how the student grows over the year. I can keep MStep, NWEA, trimester quizzes, and other large tests.

By using the color conditioning format, I can easily get a visual on where the student struggles and where they are succeeding. My school uses a stoplight color system. Green is good to go! The student has mastered the skill and is ready to move on. Yellow is for our students who need to slow down. They are rushing and making simple mistakes or they just need to slow down to really think about what they are doing. Red is for stop, reteach, now. These students need a full reteach. Sorting by color will help me pull workshop groups so that I can turn those red cells to green more intentionally.

I generally do this, but like I said, normally I do all of this on paper and/sorting the worksheets that are turned in. This style will be more fitting for the style of teaching that we have been thrown into this year. I can't wait to use this to look at students more individually and make sure that I am doing all I can for my students!

  1. Great summary! Sheets is an endless rabbit hole of possibilities! Which is great but also can be overwhelming! I like how you're thinking about something very specific (RED, YELLOW, GREEN) and using conditional formatting to help! That's a great way to implement and continue to learn/practice. Pivot tables are GREAT for large data like all your testing stuff, too! Keep up the great work.
