GCE L2 Unit 6 & 7 Review
Unit 6 was all about how to make your students work available outside of the classroom. There was also talk about syllabus, but as a 5th grade teacher, I don't need to use a syllabus. Creating blogs, sites, drive folders for student work was new to me. The ability to create a folder for students to share work they are proud of is mind blowing. Normally it is a full filing cabinet, with paperwork, and making sure that you are not passing back a worksheet that could be placed in a portfolio. Not only that, this allows students to choose what they want in their portfolio. This will be a group of work they are proud of. Not just what the teacher is proud of but what the student themselves are proud of.
In my classroom, I see myself looking into it for conference season. With Google Classroom, there is a classroom folder created on each student's drive. This already houses the work for each student, the only issue is it is not shared with the teacher. By creating the folder, I can not only see what they are adding, I can add, but I can also see what they are getting rid of. My students have a tendency of deleting work they don't want their parents to see, this won't stop them, but I can see what they are doing. I am all for the power of student choice.
Unit 7 is all about making lessons more interactive! I have used the Hyperdoc before and my students enjoyed filling it out! This lesson showed me how interactive all of the Google Platforms can be for education. I must admit, that if my curriculum did not change so regularly, I would love to spend hours taking the curriculum and making it interactive. I work for an NHA school, and due to that, we get new curriculum almost yearly.
In my classroom, I can actually see me using this for Social Studies. With all of the curriculum changes for ELA/Math/Science in my school, Social Studies has remained the same for about 10 years. We are getting new curriculum next year (yay!!) and it has the potential to be more interactive! This will give me a chance to play with these new interactive ways to present information in the new very digital format. We have been told we are keeping the one-to-one technology for the next school year. This will be another way to take Social Studies, which kiddos aren't a fan of, to something they will look forward to attending. Slides and forms is where I will start as looking at the new curriculum has shown that there will be a lot of new information/vocab. I can't wait to get started!!
LOVE the idea of student choice when it comes to creating a sharable file for conferences. As humans, we want to show off our best work to those we love and respect. You might spice it up a little by saying something like "PICK 3 of your choice and you have to include X assignment." If they did well, great, if they didn't, then they have an opportunity to explain why something was difficult or how they could grow and improve in this area. So sorry to hear your curriculum changes so regularly. I TOTALLY understand not wanting to pour hours of time into creating when you don't know if you're going to use it again next year or not. Hopefully, with SS, you've identified an area that you may get some continued value out of making some new interactive assignments! Love that you're eager to begin! HAVE FUN!
